SUMMARY:The Dilaton\, the Radion\, and Duality\, Theory Seminar (High
Energy/Cosmology)\, Zackaria Chacko\, University of Maryland
DESCRIPTION:I consider scenarios where strong conformal dynamics const
itutes the ultraviolet completion of the physics that drives electrowe
ak symmetry breaking. I identify the circumstances under which the dil
aton can remain light\, and construct the effective theory of the ligh
t dilaton in this framework. The form of the dilaton couplings to Stan
dard Model states is determined\, and corrections from conformal symme
try violating effects are shown to be under good theoretical control i
n theories where the dilaton is light. I then show how the same result
s emerge from extra dimensional warped constructions\, with the dilato
n identified as the radion\, as expected from the AdS/CFT corresponden
 ce.
