SUMMARY:STRUCTURE AND EQUIVALENCE IN YANG-MILLS THEORY\, Dept of Philo
sophy Job Talk\, Sarita Rosenstock University of California\, Irvine\,
University of California\, Irvine Department of Logic and Philosophy
of Science
DESCRIPTION:Scientists and philosophers often invoke
\nparsimony a
s a theoretical virtue alongside
\ndescriptive accuracy\, and aim
to minimize the
\namount of structure present in mathematical
\nformalisms used to represent physical systems. I
\npresent a pro
posal for formalizing structure
\ncomparison in physics using cate
gory theory\,
\nwhich can be thought of as the mathematical
\n
theory of structure. I show how this method can
\nbe used to compa
re alternative formulations of
\nYang-Mills theory (which underlie
s modern
\nparticle physics)\, and evaluate claims by
\nphilos
ophers and physicists regarding their
\nrelative structure.
\n
