SUMMARY:Nanomechanical resonators for quantum optomechanics and precis
ion metrology\, R. G. Herb Condensed Matter Seminar\, Robinjeet Singh
\, Joint Quantum Institute NIST (Gaithersburg) and the University o
 f Maryland
DESCRIPTION:Nanomechanical resonators serve as excellent candidates fo
r high precision sensing and transduction\, owing to their high mechan
ical quality factor. Applications include coherent frequency conversio
n for quantum networks\, measurement below the Standard Quantum Limit\
, and precision metrology for quantities such as temperature and press
ure. Our work focuses on designing\, fabricating\, and optically probi
ng nanomechanical resonators made out of various insulator and semicon
ductor materials for applications including quantum metrology and forc
e sensing\, optical trapping of mechanical states\, and efficient elec
tro-optic transduction of information with potential application in su
 perconducting quantum computing.
