SUMMARY:A Novel Theory of Particle Acceleration at Shocks\, Plasma Phy
 sics (Physics/ECE/NE 922) Seminar\, Damiano Caprioli\, Assistant Profe
 ssor University of Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) is a prominent energiza
tion mechanism involved in the origin of Galactic cosmic rays and in p
roducing the multi-wavelength emission in astrophysical systems such a
 s novae\, supernova remnants (SNRs)\, and galaxy clusters. <br>
\nI ou
tline how ab-initio kinetic simulations of non-relativistic shocks hel
p unraveling the very nature of this process. In particular\, I discus
s the tension between the standard theory of efficient DSA and the ste
ep spectra inferred in multi-wavelength observations of SNRs\, stressi
ng the need to go beyond the canonical prediction that strong shocks p
roduce particles with energy spectrum ~E^-2\, or harder. Finally\, I i
ntroduce CRAFT (Cosmic Ray Analytical Fast Tool)\, a quick and versati
le package for calculating spectra of accelerated particles in non-rel
ativistic shocks\, along with their radio to gamma-ray non-thermal emi
 ssion. <br>
\n<br>
\nPAUL W TERRY is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom
