SUMMARY:Dust in galaxies: extinction\, attenuation and emission\, Astr
onomy Colloquium\, Samir Salim\, Indiana University
DESCRIPTION:I will review some recent results regarding the effect of
the cosmic dust on the light we receive from galaxies. I will specific
ally discuss how the dust attenuation laws in galaxies are much more d
iverse than previously thought\, emphasizing the need to try to unders
tand the root causes of this diversity\, especially since the incorrec
t assumptions about the dust properties result in systematic and rando
m errors in the derivation of galaxy properties. I will also highlight
  that the complete
\nunderstanding of the more complex question of dus
 t attenuation is
\npredicated on resolving some fundamental puzzles re
garding the more basic phenomenon of dust extinction. I will also pres
ent some new results regarding the dust emission in the IR in the cont
ext of the upcoming JWST launch.
\nZoom Link:<br>
\n<br>
\nhttps://uwm
