SUMMARY:Euclidean Wormholes: Conceptual Issues and Applications\, Theo
ry Seminar (High Energy/Cosmology)\, Pablo Soler Gomis\, CTPU - Instit
 ute for Basic Science
DESCRIPTION:An important open question in the study of quantum gravity
is whether topologically non trivial spacetime configurations (Euclid
ean wormholes) should be taken into account in the path integral. If p
resent\, they can generate phenomenologically relevant couplings and p
lay an important role\, e.g. in breaking axionic shift symmetries. At
the same time\, they pose deep conceptual problems such as the appeara
nce of random couplings in the effective action or conflicts with holo
graphy. I will introduce in this talk some of the basic features of Eu
clidean wormholes and their phenomenological applications\, focusing i
n particular on axionic wormholes and the role played by (massive) dil
 atons in their construction.
