SUMMARY:Actions to advance equity\, diversity\, and inclusion in scien
ce\, Wisconsin Quantum Institute\, Candace Harris + Rowan Thomson\, Ca
 rleton University
DESCRIPTION:There's growing awareness of the lack of diversity in scie
nce and the presence of barriers to inclusion. What factors lead to di
sparities in representation? Why should we be motivated to effect chan
ge? What can we do to change things? Will our actions really make a di
 fference? <br>
\n<br>
\nThis presentation will focus on ideas to chall
enge the status quo – actions to advance equity\, diversity\, and in
clusion (EDI). We will discuss recent research to illustrate and raise
awareness of the many EDI challenges in science\, then explore variou
s practical ways to take action to advance EDI. These practical action
s stem from our recently released "Science is For Everyone" Teaching t
oolkit\, which provides an abundance of ideas to diversify science edu
cation and further support recruitment\, retention\, and advancement o
f all students. We will touch on the importance of diversifying conten
t and talk about how Indigenous content is being brought into post-sec
ondary science courses. Finally\, we will give an overview of other ex
citing science EDI initiatives across research and academic life.<br>
