SUMMARY:Madison Astronomical Society meeting featuring Justin Vandenbr
oucke\, Outreach\, Justin Vandenbroucke\, Physics\, WIPAC
DESCRIPTION:At the August 9\, 2024 meeting of the Madison Astronomical
Society\, Justin Vandenbroucke\, UW Madison Associate professor of ph
ysics\, will give a talk titled:
\nAstronomy with the highest energ
y light in the Universe
\nMajor breakthroughs have been made in ast
ronomy by expanding observations to far longer and far shorter wavelen
gths than we can see with our eyes. The shortest-wavelength photons ar
e gamma rays\, the highest energy photons in the Universe. Some of the
se photons are trillions of times more energetic than the human eye ca
n detect. There is a surprising variety of astronomical sources glowin
g or flashing in these very-high-energy gamma rays. They are powered b
y some of the most extreme objects in the Universe: exploding stars\,
white dwarfs\, neutron stars\, and black holes. I will describe the sc
ience that very-high-energy gamma rays enable and the prospects for th
e Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory\, an international project cur
rently under construction.
\nJustin Vandenbroucke is an associate p
rofessor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison\, in the Physics Dep
artment and Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center. His resear
ch focuses on gamma-ray astronomy with the Cherenkov Telescope Array O
bservatory\, neutrino astronomy with the IceCube Neutrino Observatory\
, and citizen science with the Distributed Electronic Cosmic-Ray Obser
vatory. Vandenbroucke obtained his PhD in Physics from UC-Berkeley and
held postdoctoral positions as a Kavli Fellow at Stanford University
and NASA Einstein Fellow at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Vand
enbroucke is currently a UW–Madison Vilas Associate.
\nThis meeti
ng will take place in person at our usual Space Place classroom locati
on. It will also be streamed live to our YouTube channel at https://ww
