SUMMARY:From Dirac fermions to topological materials to the Standard M
odel: A common thread in particle and condensed matter physics\, Phys
ics Department Colloquium\, David B. Kaplan\, University of Washington
DESCRIPTION:Ever since the discovery of the Integer Quantum Hall Effec
t topological materials have played a central role in condensed matter
physics. Surprisingly\, topological materials are ubiquitous in rela
tivistic quantum field theories as well\, and may hold the key to a fu
ndamental understanding of the Standard Model that has so far eluded u
 s. I discuss how parallel developments in the two fields are related
and their potential implications for particle physics.
