Plasma Theory Seminar
3D-printed stellarators: Towards high-field ignition stellarators
Time: 12:00 pm
Place: 2241 chamberlin Hall
Speaker: Vicente Queral, National Fusion Laboratory, CIEMAT, Spain
Abstract: In the framework of magnetic fusion energy research, tokamaks (with plasma current) and stellarators (with negligible or low plasma current) are two major types of toroidal fusion devices. The construction of stellarators by Additive Manufacturing combined with composites, and the concept of a high-field ignition-capable stellarator (i-ASTER) are presented. Such additive manufacturing technique is implemented in a tabletop stellarator (UST_2) and is planned for i-ASTER. UST_2 is an advanced quasi-isodynamic stellarator equipped with 3D-printed and detachable monolithic supports for the coils, having produced satisfactory e-beam experiments for validation. i-ASTER is a high magnetic field (B=10T on axis) and relatively small size (30 m3 plasma volume) stellarator design aimed at achieving ignition, studying ignited plasmas and advancing power extraction systems (e.g. lithium based). It is characterised by massive copper coils of variable cross-section, detachable periods, and a lithium wall/divertor.
