Hunting for Multimessenger Transients and Lensed Supernovae

Abstract: Advances in data collection technology for optical astronomy, such as the Dark Energy Camera, have facilitated the collection of some of the largest astronomical datasets, in terms of sky area, depth, number of objects, number of observations, and frequency of observations. Consequentially, physical systems that have been historically rare become represented in small, but discoverable, numbers. I have developed techniques to identify rare physical systems (counterparts to high-energy neutrinos, counterparts to gravitational waves, and gravitationally lensed supernovae) that can shed new light on the physical processes that govern the Universe. For each system of interest, I collect new or search archival observations with the Dark Energy Camera, develop selection methodologies to find the system of interest in the observations, and quantify the efficiency of the search using simulations. Each of the three analyses has its own scientific implications: I constrain the observing program required to determine the contribution of supernovae to the diffuse high-energy neutrino flux; I set constraints on the physical properties of an optical counterpart to a compact object merger; and I identify candidate lensed supernovae using a novel machine learning technique.

Light Dark Matter: Collective Effects in the Lab and in Stars

Abstract: Light dark matter candidates, such as axions and hidden photons, call for new ideas in direct detection. I discuss the recently proposed strategy of searching for e.g. axions using tunable cryogenic plasmas. The plasma haloscope enables resonant conversion by matching the axion mass to a plasma frequency, therefore converting axions to plasmons. Metamaterials are promising candidates, as the plasma frequency can be tuned. Besides axions, other dark matter candidates, such as hidden photons and scalars, can be successfully targeted with a plasma haloscope. The same collective effects are relevant for light dark matter production in the Sun and in other stars. Quantum Networking at AFRL

Abstract: Effective and efficient ways to connect disparate qubit technologies is an outstanding challenge in quantum information science. However, the ability to interface different qubit modalities will have far-reaching implications for quantum computing and quantum networking. Here we present plans and progress toward developing a distributed quantum networking testbed to distribute entanglement between trapped ion, superconducting, and integrated photonic qubits. We will also discuss student internship and visiting researcher opportunities and different pathways to connect with the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Bio: Dr. Kathy-Anne Brickman Soderberg is a Principal Research Scientist at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Information Directorate in Rome, NY. Dr. Soderberg is the primary investigator and team lead for AFRL’s Trapped-Ion Quantum Networking group. Dr. Soderberg received a B.S. in physics from the College of William and Mary, a M.S. and Ph.D. in physics from the University of Michigan, and was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Chicago. Dr. Soderberg has over fifteen years of technical experience in atomic physics and quantum information processing. Her graduate work focused on trapped-ion quantum computing research and included key demonstrations of phonon-mediated entangling gates and proof-of-principle quantum algorithms (the Grover search algorithm). Her postdoctoral work focused on novel neutral-atom quantum computing and the difficulties associated with targeted atomic interactions and optical lattice translation and control. Before joining AFRL, Dr. Soderberg was a technical consultant for quantum information science.

High-precision measurement of the W boson mass at CDF

Abstract: We present a measurement of the mass of the W boson, the charged mediator of the weak force. The measurement is performed using data corresponding to 8.8/fb of integrated luminosity collected by the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron between 2002 and 2011. In a sample with approximately 4 million W boson candidate events, we measure M(W) = 80433.5+-6.4(stat)+-6.9(syst) MeV = 80433.5+-9.4 MeV. The measurement has a precision exceeding that of all previous measurements of M(W) combined and it is in significant tension with the standard model expectation.
