- Understanding the production of astrophysical neutrinos in X-ray dense and gamma-ray obscured environments
- Time: 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
- Place: 5280 Chamberlin
- Speaker: Arifa Khatee Zathul, Physics PhD Graduate Student
- Abstract: The IceCube Neutrino Observatory has detected the first sources contributing to the diffuse flux of astrophysical neutrinos discovered in 2013. In this talk, I will present evidence that these neutrinos originate in the innermost regions of active galactic nuclei, where the X-ray corona surrounding the supermassive black hole acts as the target for photohadronic interactions. Using multiwavelength data, I will also argue that sources are gamma-ray obscured during neutrino production episodes. This is supported by constraints placed by IceCube's diffuse neutrino flux measurement using the Enhanced Starting Track Event Selection (ESTES), Medium Energy Starting Events (MESE), and CombinedFit datasets.

- PGSC Headshot Event
- Time: 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm
- Place: Botany Garden
- Abstract: The Physics Graduate Student Counsil (PGSC) hosts a headshot event each year where every graduate student can get their headshot done for free! This is a great opportunity if you need a photo of yourself for the physics directory, your LinkedIn profile, or any professional setting. You do not need to sign up for this in advance. Just show up with your dazzling smile!
Rain date: September 26th.
Feel free to email me at jlin475@wisc.edu if you have any questions or concerns!
- Host: Joyce Lin (PGSC Chair of Prof Dvlpmt)
