Physics Department Colloquium
From Dirac fermions to topological materials to the Standard Model: A common thread in particle and condensed matter physics
Date: Friday, March 6th
Time: 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm
Place: Chamberlin 2241
Speaker: David B. Kaplan, University of Washington
Abstract: Ever since the discovery of the Integer Quantum Hall Effect topological materials have played a central role in condensed matter physics. Surprisingly, topological materials are ubiquitous in relativistic quantum field theories as well, and may hold the key to a fundamental understanding of the Standard Model that has so far eluded us. I discuss how parallel developments in the two fields are related and their potential implications for particle physics.
