- Matter Outflows in Neutron Star Mergers

- Abstract: Determining the properties of the mildly relativistic outflows produced during and after the merger of neutron star binaries is crucial to understand the role of mergers in the production of heavy elements, as well as to analyze multi-messenger observations of these systems. The mass and composition of these outflows determine how much matter is available for r-process nucleosynthesis, as well as the relative abundance of the various elements produced by the r-process. Additionally, the properties of these matter outflows are tightly linked to the observable characteristics of kilonovae. In this talk, I will discuss what merger simulations have taught us so far about neutron star merger outflows, focusing particularly on the dynamics of black hole-neutron star mergers, and on the main sources of uncertainty in current outflow models for both black hole-neutron star and neutron star-neutron star binary mergers.

- Planet Formation and the Composition of Rocky Planets

- Abstract: The composition of a rocky planet tells us about the structure of the planet, its geology, what it might be like on the surface and ultimately whether or not it hosts life. Identifying the key processes during planet formation that control composition is crucial to understanding exoplanets, particularly as we start to detect many more rocky planets in the coming decades. White dwarfs that have accreted planetary material provide a unique window onto the composition of exoplanetary bodies. My talk will focus on how we can use the ratios of key species such as Ca/Mg, Ca/Fe observed in the white dwarf atmospheres to learn about planet formation. I will discuss observational evidence for a match between the compositions of planet-host stars and planets (Bonsor et al, 2021). I will explore how these observations of planetary material in the atmospheres of white dwarfs can tell us about how planetary bodies lose volatiles and form iron cores, exploring the geology of exoplanetary systems (Harrison et al, 2021b). I will present observational evidence (based on Mn/Na) that rocky planetary bodies in exoplanetary systems lost volatiles both during the initial phase of grain growth, whilst embedded in the nebula gas and later in the system's evolution, post-nebula, due to heating from impacts (Harrison et al, 2021a).

- Axion Searches with two Superconducting Radio Frequency Cavities

- Abstract: Axion (and axion-like-particle), a pseudo-scalar well-motivated in the beyond-the-Standard-Model physics, has a unique two photon vertex, which allows terrestrial experiments to directly look for them from the Sun or as a component of dark matter. Laboratory searches, with both the source and the detection of axion under control, so-called Light-shining-through-walls (LSW), are complementary probes to those direct searches above. We propose a LSW axion search strategy using superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities in the GHz range. SRF cavities have exceptionally high quality factor, which both boost the number of photons stored in the emitter cavity, and enhance the signal power in the receiver cavity.
